This weeks quote comes from "Succeeding Against the Odds" the autobiography of John H. Johnson the founder of Ebony & Jet Magazine and Fashion Fair cosmetics line. This is an excellent book to read because it shares what Johnson did to shape his mindset during a time when there were extraordinary stumbling blocks on the path of success for any African American. Here's just a bit of what Johnson shares regarding his formula for success:
"Faith, self-confidence, and a positive mental attitude: These three were the basic messages of the self-help books that changed my life. Most of these books listed one-two-three practical steps for improving personal effectiveness. One step was to practice conversations and selling approaches in private before trying them out in public. I started practicing speeches and approaches to girls before the mirror at home. I learned something else that I've never forgotten: There is no defense against an excellence that speaks to a real need."
Faith, self-confidence and a positive mental attitude were the three qualities Johnson strengthened to help him achieve his dreams. He took a practical approach and read lots of books including books by Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich) and Dale Carnegie (How to Win Friends and Influence People). He actually wanted to succeed and so he put in to effect one of my most popular quotes "Never practice positive thinking without the positive action of application." We all can succeed at what we want to do in life when we actually try and when we attend to developing these three essential energies: faith, self-confidence and a positive mental attitude.
Remember, time is short. Do your happy dance. Enjoy life!
