This week I'm continuing the series of selections from Susan L. Taylor's wonderful book of essays called "All About Love."
"Our challenges show us the fences we must climb, the doors we must push open. Insecurity drove me to college for the first time nearly two decades after high school, when I was already editor-in-chief of Essence. It was rational insecurity that drove me in the direction I needed to take, praise God. Irrational insecurity is believing that we are insufficient or lacking in any way. Life serves up our lessons in ways we will see and heed."
When I read this I was struck by the term "rational insecurity" since I've been giving a lot of thought to insecurity recently. This new term really stuck out of this passage for me. Irrational insecurity is based on believing that we are insufficient and that we lack which immobilizes us and interferes with the positive forward motion of our lives. So according to Ms. Taylor there is a way of looking at insecurity that has merit. The kind of rational examination of that which we are insecure about and using that honest assessment to 'fix' what ails us. I encourage you to take a look at those things you may be insecure about and examine them rationally and know that you too can 'fix' whatever is ailing you.
Remember, time is precious. Do your happy dance. Enjoy life!
