This week's Snapshot on Resilience is educator, playwright and actress and entrepreneur, D'Shaun Booker, founder of Arts Creating Unity Institute, Inc. and Oasis Ministry Productions located in Los Angeles, CA.
What is your definition of resilience? In the simplest form Resilience is the ability to bounce back! One’s ability to adapt well and recover quickly after stress, adversity, trauma or tragedy. Resilience is the ability to handle problems and stress in our lives effectively. In a nutshell…get through , get over, and thrive afterwards!!
In what way(s) do you see yourself representing resilience? In my ability to keep pushing forward to create the company that I desire. So many times I experience breakdowns instead of breakthroughs…not getting grants I applied for, not getting contracts I qualify for, meetings being placed on hold indefinitely that could move me to the next level, not having the resources and connections to take a project to the next level. Overall, I must keep my goal before me, believe in myself, get up and start again!
What is your life’s passion? My passion is life is to serve others…to sincerely and in a healthy way inspire, encourage, and coach people into realizing their potential. To allow myself to be a vessel used to channel the blessings of God to his people…through writing, directing, creating, coaching, speaking, teaching, facilitating, simply just by being an example!
What inspired you to pursue this passion? My own desire to just help others in some kind of way. As a child it came in the form of wanting to become a teacher, so I played school often with friends and my younger cousins. I enjoyed not only being a leader but giving a sense of confidence and courage to others. I was always the one willing to lead at any cost.
How do you use this passion to make an impact in the world? I’ve been blessed to begin my own production company, Oasis Ministry Productions – a production company which I write, direct, and produce spiritually-influenced plays and Arts Creating Unity Institute, Inc. my non-profit in which I use Theatre Arts s a tool to teach cultural sensitivity & awareness, tolerance, emp owerment, and creativity to youth and women.
What causes are dear to your heart and why? Social Justice at all means! Why because it is vital that each human being is always afforded the right to have a voice and be heard fairly. I believe that living a life fully means knowing and understanding your truth! Your truth being your purpose not so much your likes but your purpose to add to the world in a healthy way. Giving your part of greatness to our World.
If any, what was your lowest point as you matured in your craft and career? Wow! Only one LOL…Realizing that no matter how good your work is…how hard you worked… seeing how many lives have been touched by your efforts and it all seems to stop there. The goal/vision you have for this work has seemed to stop, so you must somehow encourage yourself to continue with this project…when you quietly ask yourself…”but why?”
What have you done that’s helped you stay positive as you’ve taken this journey? Pray and talk it out with God. Look at others who have gone through their own storms and made it! Ask myself “if not this, what else would you want to do?” And when I answer there is nothing else…I get positive again!
What’s your vision for the future? To live a prosperous life that encompasses the totality of my gifts, skills, talents, and abilities in ways that will continuously bring empowerment to others and myself in good ways that are pleasing to God!
How do you see your work healing, inspiring and motivating others? Through the ministries God has called me to do through my production company, non-profit, and missions work.
For you, what does it mean to live a meaningful life? Living a life that serves others.
What words of wisdom and advice can you offer to other women who desire to live a meaningful life? First seek your true authentic self, love yourself, accept yourself and then continue to allow yourself to grow into your most awesome self.
Thank you D'shaun for sharing the insights you've learned thus far on your journey!
