Coaches, 3 Tips on How to Handle it When a Client has to Call it Quits

Coaching is most assuredly not an easy job.  When you're working in the realm of human emotion, you can inadvertently hit a trigger point for someone and sometimes that means that connection can end abruptly. This post is  inspired by a blog post I recently read on a fellow coaches blog. She said she'd lost 2 clients that month but from there she went on to attack the clients decision to discontinue their servies with her.

If a client chooses to stop working with you it can feel like a personal dig, but I think the right attitude to take is one of blessing that person to move onto a coach that is a better fit for them and the stage the person is at in their life

Her are a few observations on what to do when a client relationship goes down hill:

#1 - Don't call out your client in public. The coach I'm refering to in the beginning of this post went on the attack saying that the clients failed. Hmm, it seems that someone did fail, but I don't think it wasn the clients.

#2 - Don't take it personally, at least not in the wrong way. What I mean by this is to take it personal to the extent that you may want to ask a few questions to determine if there is something you may need to adjust in your coaching style or proceedures.  Don't take the request to end services as a personal affront.  Keep your ego in check. It's not about you.

#3 - Don't make the client feel guilty. We all know that people are complex individuals. Heck, us coaches are too. The last thing a person needs is to be made to feel bad for coming to what was probably a difficult decision for them.  The reasons a client may choose to stop coaching can be manifold. To assume that they are just lazy shows a level of laziness on the part of the coach themself.

I hope that you never have a client relationship that goes down hill, however, if you do I hope you remember these 3 tips that will help see you through.
